This 300,000 sq. ft. headquarters building represents the complete rehabilitation and reuse of the old Sterns Department Store. In 1923, nine stories were added to the original six-story cast iron structure built in 1906. As part of the current renovations, two open light courts were enclosed, resulting in a large rectangular floor area (100'x200'). much more suited to office use. All the old stairs, elevators, and shafts were removed and replaced by a new, modern core with to banks of elevators. Likewise, the masonry exterior was removed and replaced with a new glass curtain wall facing Bryant Park to the south and Grace Plaza to the north. A new address and entry has been established on Sixth Avenue leading to a new marble lobby with vaulted ceiling and indirect cove lighting.
