This 740,000 gsf facility, containing 42 courtrooms and ancillary facilities, is the winning entry in GSA competition. Rising over 550 feet, it forms a companion to the existing Federal Courts building designed by Cass Gilbert and the Municipal Building by McKim, Mead & White. The choice of the classical style is natural, looking both to the existing context and the precedent of other great Federal courthouse architecture. The courts and judges chambers are organized in the tower on alternating floors, while the support departments are in the larger base.
