This small university museum is a careful composition of simple geometric forms, relating in this way and in its use of limestone to the Richardsonian Romanesque of the campus. The forms have been disengaged here to create a welcoming forecourt and sculpture garden. The museum, positioned on the edge of the campus is designed to serve as a link between the university and the community. The existing campus pathway system has been engaged and anchored by the building and its forecourt. A sense of open welcome has been a primary goal of the design. The galleries themselves are set of clear, cool esthetically quiet spaces, wondrously lighted from above. Natural light, augmented with artful illumination, filtered and shaded, creates a rich glare free environment. The interior esthetic in minimalist, in gallery design the art comes first. |
