A long array of columns has been set at the edge of a green. This wall defines the edge and gives a transparent and welcoming character to the center. The green furthermore is a grand park-like space, setting the pedestrian precinct apart form the automotive. This offers a transitional zone, as one crosses the green to the sanctuary, school or social hall. In the sanctuary, a pendentive dome is suspended above the space. Light comes form above, around the edges. The floor, seats, walls (to 13 feet), and the dome are all wood. The walls above are white, reflecting light. References are made to the oculus of the Pantheon and historical domes in an oblique way. The domes of Sir John Soane are a primary precedent.
A square cloister-like space has been created at the heart of the school and administration. This protected garden offers visual amenity to the surrounding uses and circulation. It will also provide a pleasant environment for learning, relaxation or outdoor receptions. In a suburban setting, landscape considerations are as important as the design of the building. Here, the green spaces have been carefully shaped. The movement through them from the parking affords a pleasant transition. Even before the expansion is built, the North and East sides of the building are configured in a rich and relaxed profile, creating pleasant outdoor green spaces.
