The Royal Theater
New Playhouse on the Copenhagen Waterfront

Nature in the form of the river becomes civilized by the imposition of geometry, a circle. The circle is embraced and brought to life by the setting of an array of columns. The building engages the columns and the edge, unifying the site, the river and the city. This landscape gesture establishes the place of the dramatic arts in the city and in this newly reclaimed precinct. Set against this curve, and continuing the grid of the city is the playhouse building itself. The foyer is spatially the element that engages the curve.

In an age dominated by the isolating influence of media, it is all the more important to make places for real face-to-face human interaction. A central focus of this proposal is the establishment of an invitation to a social experience, and the creation of a grand foyer in which to engage in this experience. The foyer is set parallel to the waters edge and sits magically suspended above it on several levels.
